How sales tax works here

Nova Scotia is an HST province: the 5% federal GST and the provincial part combine into one tax the CRA administers. On April 1, 2025 the province lowered its share, bringing the HST from 15% to 14% β€” so use 14% for sales on or after that date.

You generally register once taxable sales pass $30,000. Basic groceries and many health and financial services are zero-rated or exempt, so a real invoice can differ from a flat 14%.

FAQ

It's 14% for sales on or after April 1, 2025 β€” the province lowered its part of the HST from 15% to 14%. Sales before that date used 15%.

Generally once your taxable sales pass $30,000 β€” measured over a single calendar quarter or the last four consecutive quarters. Under that you're a "small supplier" and registering is optional. The $30,000 counts your worldwide taxable sales and those of anyone you're associated with, not your profit.

Switch the calculator to "Take GST/HST out of a total" and enter the tax-included amount. It divides by one plus the combined rate to find the price before tax, then shows the tax on top.
