How sales tax works here

BC isn't an HST province: you charge two separate taxes β€” the 5% federal GST, administered by the CRA, and a 7% provincial PST, administered by BC. They have separate registrations and separate rules, and PST has its own list of what's taxable and exempt, so it doesn't simply apply to everything the GST does.

You generally register for GST once taxable sales pass $30,000. PST registration follows BC's own rules once you sell taxable goods or certain services in the province. Because the two taxes are separate, this tool splits them so the breakdown matches your invoice.

FAQ

No. GST is federal (CRA); PST is a separate provincial tax with its own rules, exemptions and registration. That's why British Columbia isn't a single-HST province and the calculator shows two lines.

Yes β€” they're separate systems. You register for GST/HST with the CRA and for PST with the BC government, and file each on its own schedule.

Switch the calculator to "Take GST/HST out of a total" and enter the tax-included amount. It divides by one plus the combined rate to find the price before tax, then shows the tax on top.
