Optional — crossing $30,000 in one quarter triggers registration on its own.

Count worldwide taxable sales — yours and any associated businesses'. This is revenue, not profit, and it excludes exempt supplies.

This is general information, not advice — special rules apply to taxis, ride-share, non-residents and public service bodies. We'll confirm your exact situation.

How the $30,000 rule works

You have to register for GST/HST once you stop being a "small supplier." That happens when your taxable sales — worldwide, and including any associated businesses — go over $30,000, measured either in a single calendar quarter or across the last four consecutive quarters.

If you blow past $30,000 in one quarter, you have to register right away, and you charge GST/HST starting with the very sale that put you over. If you creep over the line across four quarters instead, you stop being a small supplier at the end of the month after that, with a short window to register.

Under $30,000, registering is optional — but it can pay off, because a registrant can claim back the GST/HST paid on business expenses through input tax credits. Special rules apply to taxi and ride-share drivers, who register from day one regardless of income.

FAQ

You can still register, but the CRA can treat you as having been required to register from the earlier date, which can mean tax you should have collected. The sooner it's fixed, the smaller the problem — we can help you catch up.

Sometimes. Voluntary registration lets you claim input tax credits on your expenses, which can help if you buy a lot of taxable supplies. It also means charging your customers tax and filing returns, so it's worth a quick conversation first.
