FAQ
CRA usually allows filing adjustments for previous years. If you have additional documents or corrected tax slips (T4, T5, RRSP, FHSA, etc.), it is worth checking the possibility of making changes.
It depends on your situation. Correcting an error yourself, before CRA finds it, is generally the better position to be in.
In this situation, an adjustment request (T1-ADJ) may be required. Whether an adjustment is appropriate depends on the details of the return and should be reviewed before submitting the request to CRA.
Clients often leave carry-forward amounts unused. Going back through previous years can reveal those amounts, lower the tax owing, or lead to an additional refund. If there are grounds for it, we file a request to recalculate.
If marital status was reported incorrectly, CRA may recalculate certain benefits for past periods.
In some cases, such a reassessment can be appealed. A Notice of Objection is filed, usually within 90 days. Our CRA audit support team can help you assess the grounds and prepare a response.
In simple cases, an explanation may not be required. For more complex changes, a short note on why you are correcting it is usually added. That helps CRA review the request faster and makes follow-up questions less likely.
If investments or crypto transactions were left out or reported incorrectly, the returns for those years may need adjusting. That brings the reporting back in line with CRA requirements.
In some cases, adjusting income for past years may change CCB payment amounts. That is why before submitting changes, it is important to assess possible consequences and check whether recalculation is advisable in your situation.
Errors in tax returns can be corrected by filing an adjustment (T1 Adjustment). What can be changed, and how far back, depends on the year and the type of error. We can help you with this.
If during the move the province of residence was reported incorrectly, this may affect tax calculation due to provincial rate differences. In this case, it is worth checking if an adjustment is needed.
What matters is that the return is right, whatever the amount involved. Sometimes an adjustment is worth doing anyway — for example, to confirm your income for a bank or a mortgage. It is worth checking first whether the adjustment is justified and meets CRA requirements.
We can review old returns. If we find something that works in your favour, we will suggest filing a T1-ADJ.
Yes — many simple, single-year changes can be done on your own. See our guide to the T1-ADJ form: download and ways to file it yourself — it covers the online CRA option, certified software (ReFILE) and the paper form. This page is for when you'd rather we handle the adjustment for you.
