Drivers and couriers get paid by different platforms on different schedules, while the vehicle costs never stop. Sooner or later the question comes up: what income and expenses actually go on the T1, and how. We work with this industry regularly and know how driver income and expenses are reported under CRA requirements.

Not Sure Where to Start?

If you are a driver or courier and do not know exactly what you need — that is normal. A short conversation will help clarify your situation.

FAQ

Do not choose one total without reconciling it. Platform statements can separate fares, tips, taxes, and fees, while bank deposits may show only the net payout. Keep the statements and bank records together so the income and fees can be traced; the CRA explains the general record-keeping requirements.

It may be a useful starting point, but it may not capture every business trip or the total kilometres driven during the year. The CRA asks for records that support business kilometres and total kilometres, along with vehicle costs. See the CRA guidance on motor vehicle expenses.

For commercial ridesharing, the CRA says drivers generally must register for GST/HST from the moment they begin providing ridesharing services. Delivery-only work can follow different rules, so separate passenger trips from delivery income before deciding what applies. The CRA sets out the distinction in its taxi and ride-sharing guidance.

The income can belong on the same personal return, but each platform should still be reconciled separately before the totals are combined. Keep the T4 from employment, platform statements, tips, fees, and vehicle records so one income stream does not hide another.
