Alberta GST Calculator

Alberta has no provincial sales tax — just the 5% federal GST, the lowest sales tax in Canada. Add 5% GST to a price, or pull it back out of a tax-included total.

How sales tax works here

Alberta is the only province with no PST or HST. You only ever charge the 5% federal GST — there's no separate provincial sales tax to register for, collect or file. On a $100 sale that's $5 GST and $105 in total.

You generally have to register for GST once your taxable sales pass $30,000; below that it's optional. Basic groceries and many health and financial services are zero-rated or exempt, so a real invoice can differ from a flat 5%.

FAQ

No — Alberta has never had a provincial sales tax. You only deal with the 5% federal GST, which is why Alberta's total sales tax is the lowest in the country.

Generally once your taxable sales pass $30,000 — measured over a single calendar quarter or the last four consecutive quarters. Under that you're a "small supplier" and registering is optional. The $30,000 counts your worldwide taxable sales and those of anyone you're associated with, not your profit.

Switch the calculator to "Take GST/HST out of a total" and enter the tax-included amount. It divides by one plus the combined rate to find the price before tax, then shows the tax on top.
