You cannot open one until your taxes are filed. That catches new businesses out, and we sort it in the right order.

Authorize us once — you have 10 business days — and quarterly returns stop being your problem.
Behind on GST?
Paper filing now carries a penalty of its own. We file the missed periods electronically and answer CRA.

FAQ
For self-employed individuals, GST/HST registration generally becomes mandatory once revenue passes $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, in line with current CRA guidance. Pinning down exactly when you crossed that threshold matters, so that you register on time.
In this situation, you should register as soon as possible and determine the period for which GST/HST should have been charged. Further steps depend on the specific situation. In some cases, you can register the GST/HST account 'retroactively'. Contact us to resolve your situation.
You can register voluntarily before reaching the threshold. Whether it makes sense depends on your expenses and the kind of work you do. If you plan to work with larger clients, it can also be worth doing at some point.
In many cases, services provided to clients outside Canada are not subject to GST/HST. However, rules depend on specific conditions.
Keep records of what you spend on materials, including the GST/HST inside those costs. When you file your GST/HST return, that amount can be claimed and reduce what you owe.
Short-term rental income (usually stays of up to 30 days) is generally subject to GST/HST and often requires registration from the first dollar earned. In some cases, the platform may collect the tax automatically, however the property owner remains responsible for proper registration and accurate tax reporting. Additional provincial or local requirements may also apply.
This one has a lot of moving parts and turns on the specifics. It is worth going through it in a consultation to see whether a rebate is available in your case.
It depends on the sales model and the platform's role in the transaction. In some cases, the platform may collect GST/HST, but the seller's obligations regarding registration and reporting may remain. We recommend discussing this in a consultation.
If you are registered for GST/HST, you can reduce the amount you owe by claiming Input Tax Credits (ITCs) for the GST/HST paid on eligible business purchases and expenses used for commercial activities and supported by proper receipts.
File the return first, so the exact amount owing is known. In some circumstances CRA may agree to a payment arrangement. That has to be set up on time and according to the current rules, so this is a good point to get professional help.
It depends on your business goals and how you plan cash flow. At the start you can choose the period yourself, though CRA can change it.
Start by reading the CRA letter closely and following exactly what it asks for. Usually that means records of income, expenses, and your GST/HST calculations for the period named. Send only the materials requested, and meet the deadlines in the letter. Our CRA audit support team can help you respond correctly.
You need to file a final report, make the necessary payment, and submit an application to close the account.
It depends on the province, the type of goods or services, and whether your activity creates a registration obligation there. In some cases a separate provincial registration is required. It is worth getting advice before you decide.
Don't take our word for it
None of this is our interpretation. It is CRA's own wording — check it yourself:
- CRA — Register as a resident with a Canadian business: since July 14, 2026, Business Registration Online works only through your own CRA account
- CRA — How to file your GST/HST return: mandatory electronic filing since 2024, and Represent a Client as a filing method
- CRA — Confirm my representative's authorization request: the 10-business-day window
- CRA — When to register for and start charging the GST/HST: the $30,000 small-supplier rule
