FAQ
Keep the invoice, invoice date, currency, payment record, platform or bank fee, and the Canadian-dollar amount used in the books. Use a consistent, supportable conversion method and preserve the source. That gives the preparer enough information to review the reporting instead of rebuilding it from net deposits.
Keep both. The client charge, platform fee, tax, currency conversion, and net payout may be separate parts of the same transaction. Reconcile the platform statement to the bank deposit so fees are not hidden by reporting only the net amount.
The answer depends on the service, the client, and the place-of-supply and zero-rating rules. Do not decide from the client’s email address alone. Review where the client belongs, what was supplied, and the documents supporting that conclusion before invoicing.
Both income streams can be reported on the same personal return, but the freelance activity needs its own income and expense records. Keep the T4 separate from invoices, platform statements, business expenses, and any GST/HST records.
