FAQ

Processor deposits can be net of card fees, refunds, tips, or other adjustments. Reconcile the sales report to the processor statement and bank deposit, recording sales and fees separately. This is more reliable than using bank deposits as the sales total.

The payment arrangement alone does not decide status. Control over schedule and clients, who provides tools and products, financial risk, and the actual working relationship can all matter. The CRA’s employee or self-employed guide explains the factors to review.

Separate retail products from supplies consumed while providing services. Keep purchase invoices and a consistent inventory record for items held for resale. That makes sales margins and year-end inventory easier to support.

Only if the real working relationship supports contractor status. A written agreement helps document the arrangement but does not override the facts. Review the relationship using the CRA’s status factors before choosing payroll or contractor treatment.
