Tax Accountant for Trades Contractors in Canada

In the trades, some jobs pay right away and others pay in stages, while the daily costs never stop. Not all of them are treated the same on a T1. We work with trades contractors year-round and can help your return show what the year actually looked like.

FAQ

Some costs may be deductible when they are incurred to earn business income, but the treatment depends on what was bought and how it is used. A large tool or piece of equipment may not be treated the same way as a recurring supply. Keep receipts and usage records; the CRA summarizes common business expenses.

No. The label in a contract is only one part of the relationship; control, tools, financial risk, and the opportunity for profit can also matter. Review the working arrangement using the CRA’s employee or self-employed guide before filing it one way or the other.

There is no single income number that makes incorporation right for everyone. The decision depends on profit, how much cash you need personally, liability, customers, and the added bookkeeping and corporate filing work. A comparison should use your actual numbers, not a generic rule of thumb.

Record the date, destination, purpose, and kilometres for business trips, and keep the supporting vehicle costs. Separate business driving from personal use instead of estimating it at tax time. The CRA provides details on motor vehicle records and expenses.
