T2 nil return in Canada: do you file with no income?
You incorporated, but the business never really got going. No customers. No sales. Now someone asks whether you filed the company's tax return. Your first thought: a return for what?
For an ordinary Canadian-resident corporation, the answer is yes. A T2 is required each tax year, even when the company is inactive or has no income tax to pay. Putting the business on pause does not automatically pause its reporting.
So what is there to prepare when nothing came in? Let's look at a simple example — and the work you can leave with us.
No sales does not mean an empty financial year
T2 is the company's income tax return. Nil means zero. But a ‘T2 nil return’ does not mean every number in the company's accounts is zero.
Imagine a company with no customers yet. You put money into its bank account, bought a computer for the business and paid monthly bank fees. Sales are zero. But those transactions still happened.
The return needs to reflect the company's actual figures. That means accounting for what happened, even in a quiet year, rather than treating ‘nothing earned’ as ‘nothing to record’.
Key idea
No sales is part of the story. The T2 draws on the company's financial year as a whole.
You know what happened. We can handle the accounting.
You can explain that the company never opened, or that you bought a computer for it. You do not need to know which accounting category that purchase belongs in before speaking to us.
Your knowledge of the business is the starting point. We use that context and the records to do the accounting work.

Accounts and T2
Review the records, prepare year-end statements and file the return.
You do not need finished bookkeeping to start the conversation.
What can Anytime Accounting take off your hands?
The final return is only one part of the job. You can hand over the work that leads up to it, too — including when the books are unfinished.
Our corporate tax service can cover:
- The accounting. We review the records, clarify transactions and organize the figures. You explain what a payment was for; we work out how to record it.
- The year-end picture. We prepare financial statements — a summary of what the company owns, owes, earned and spent.
- The T2. We prepare and file the corporate return using those figures, including for a no-income year.
You can delegate the preparation, not just the final form
In the computer example, you know what you bought and why. Turning that into accounts and a return is the work you can leave with us. You can stay focused on launching or running the business without taking on return preparation as another job.
The books do not have to be ready before you call
You might start with: ‘I registered the company, paid a few expenses and don't know whether anything was filed.’ That gives us something useful to discuss. A complete spreadsheet is not the price of admission.
In the free initial consultation, we'll talk about your situation, the work you want to hand over and how to begin. If we go ahead with the preparation, we'll explain which records we need from you.
Key idea
You can come with a question about your company. You do not have to come with the accounting already done.

We had a consistently professional and well-organized experience. Olga Vozna is detail-oriented and structured in her approach, making the process smooth and stress-free. The team at Anytime Accounting was also responsive and supportive throughout. Everything felt efficient and well managed, and we were confident that all documents were prepared and submitted correctly. Highly recommended for anyone looking for reliable accounting support.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ We have been working with Anytime Accounting for the second year in a row for tax filing and related services, and overall the experience has been positive. The team has been friendly, professional, and knowledgeable, and from a service perspective everything went smoothly. We truly appreciate their help and the way they handle the process. One thing worth noting is that the pricing structure felt noticeably different this year compared to our previous experience. In our case, the final cost ended up being a little over twice as high as last year, mainly because additional forms were billed separately. This is not necessarily a complaint, but it is something clients may want to clarify in advance so there are no surprises. That said, I do not have concerns about the quality of the work itself. The specialists were polite, competent, and helpful throughout, which is why we returned for a second year. Their office is located on the 9th floor of Plaza 1000 in downtown Calgary, which is convenient, although anyone arriving by car should expect paid parking or plan ahead for other parking options nearby. Another strong advantage is that they also offer remote online tax filing, which is very convenient for people who do not have time for in-person meetings or simply prefer to handle everything online. Overall, a professional and reliable agency with a helpful team. I’m thankful for their support and would recommend them, with the suggestion that clients confirm the pricing details beforehand based on their own tax situation.
FAQ
T2 is the corporation's income tax return; T1 is your personal return. The corporation has its own reporting obligation. Filing your personal taxes does not replace its T2.
The filing deadline is six months after the corporation's tax year-end. If it falls on a weekend or a CRA-recognized public holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. Any tax payment has a separate deadline and can be due earlier.
Yes, we work with missing corporate returns. We can discuss the company's history and the work needed for those years. If CRA has sent a letter, mention it and its response deadline when you contact us; you do not need to sort out every past year before that first conversation.
No. T2 Short Return is a shorter CRA return for corporations that meet its conditions. No sales alone does not establish eligibility. Checking the appropriate return is part of the preparation you can delegate.
